Typical Girls and it's unique theatre style.

Last week, we attended our first performance of hopefully many at Sheffield's most popular in-the-round theatre, The Crucible. Typical girls breathed a breath of fresh air into the space. Involving music and well written characters, it was a really enjoyable performance.

What I enjoyed most about it was th actors realistic and believable portrayal of their characters. This meant that you grow attached to them and their story, evidently they were criminals and had done something wrong to be in the situation they were in, however it was never stated what they did. I liked this because it took away their identity's of criminals and showed them to us as ust adults who were struggling and found a love and passion for music and performance.

I also found the music itself to be an interesting watch, the choice of punk style not only educated me on the way the intentions and brief history of punk, but was used in the perfect way to portray their emotions through. As well as this it was evident to see that they used music to captivate their roles as women, as they were not 'Typical girls' as they were women locked up in a prison, and not conforming to the average role of a women. They used punk music to embody this and not fight it, giving an almost feminist revolution aspect to the show. They spoke about important topics that had a message.

All in all, I was really impressed with typical girls and its part-gig style of performance, It was different and exciting and I would not hesitate to recommend it.

  • Jasmine, I'm glad you enjoyed the show! 😊 You highlight some really interesting points here and you do a good job of teasing out the feminist aspects of the show when you talk about the characters being anything but typical. Good stuff!

  • Really strong take on the very personal experience you had with the show. Good stuff :)
