As part of the extraordinary project The Walk, Sheffield Theatres is proud to welcome Little Amal, a 3.5m puppet of a 10-year-old refugee girl, as she nears the end of her international journey from the Syria-Turkey border to Manchester.

All are invited to come and see Amal on Friday 29 October and take part in the free community activities on her journey through Sheffield.

A FUN DAY OF CELEBRATION, SHARING AND ACTIVITIES

2.30pm – 6.30pm, Tudor Square

Sheffield Theatres welcomes you to take part in free, family-friendly creative workshops in Tudor Square.

Join in with making Quotes of Welcome, a spectacular art installation of joyful and welcoming messages. Test your baking skills with bread making workshops, or why not learn how to create traditional henna patterns? You can have a go at craft activities, including building mini homes for Amal. Or, try your hand at creating magical lanterns which will guide Little Amal along her path as the sun sets.

All workshops are free to attend and will be run by an array of talented, creative practitioners.

Refreshments will be available from Crucible Corner throughout the day.

LITTLE AMAL’S JOURNEY THROUGH SHEFFIELD

Sheffield Waterfront Mini Festival
1pm – 5.15pm

1 - 4pm: The Canal & River Trust welcome Little Amal to Sheffield at Victoria Quays with free, family-friendly fun. There’s a range of activities from arts and crafts and live music to canoeing and more.

4.25pm: Be among the first to see Little Amal as she enters the city by boat and arrives at Victoria Quays for a celebratory welcome by Stand & Be Counted Theatre company.

Tudor Square Celebrations
2.30pm – 6.30pm

The square will be decorated with an art installation of Quotes of Welcome: warming messages in different languages created by a community engagement project, led by DINA, Sheffield Theatres and Off The Shelf. There will be performances from One World Choir and Sheffield Hallam University, before Amal arrives at 6pm and Sheffield People’s Theatre present a dance performance piece. When a larger than life fox lantern, created by Patrick Amber, arrives with fellow woodland creatures, they will play a game of hide and seek with Amal before leading her to the Peace Gardens.

The Peace Gardens Finale
6.30pm – 7.30pm

Films will be projected onto the Town Hall by Sheffield Hallam University, before Amal conducts a brass band with a twist.
