Filming for Mater Mortem

Hi allI dont know how to start writing this so ill just introduce the recent project subject ive been working on over the last month.Mater Mortem (Latin for dun dun duh mother death): a microbudget short film psychological horror developed by student company twisted tree written and directed by Hope Phillips and produced by Fran Yepes (both 3rd year film and media students from SHU itself) - follows the story of a young female incarnation of the Grim Reaper in search of different and desperate people in comprising situations on the verge of being taken by death and how their reactions are influenced by deaths persona and really gives death a voice and perception-changing personality.I auditioned about a month ago for a young and vulnerable character named Benny which I later got the part for which I never wouldve expected. Filming took place in Matlock for about a week from the 5th November filming different scenes that made up the short film - one of which I filmed on the Tuesday. It was a fight scene and initially when arriving on location and rehearsing in choreography; made me feel quite uncomfortable at first but by the time we got into it (and after countless makeup sessions with smelly fake blood) it was alreqsy dark and the batreries on equipment were dwindling fast.Essentially before it got dark and we had to use lighting which sort of threw off the scent of a scene set in traditional 1930s I had to make myself the victim - this involved getting thrown around abit which was actually fun! Despite getting battered/bruised and when I died I became a talking ghost XDUnfortunately while we are still in post-production (film not come out yet!) - Hope out director felt that we needed to do some whats called ADR basically additional dialogue to replace and dub over the misheard stuff captured on film (we filmed in a dark cold wind tunnel under an old train station so I had to do alot of loud panicked breathing to make it even audible!) - the ADD session I literally did not expect because everything seemed fine that day/night but we had a few laughs while I was casually screaming into the microphone within the confines of the audio booth - actually on and off air!)Currently I am auditioning for another short film this time set in Bakewell! Despite settling in well this year (eventually) and although initially feeling the weight of all my other projects I feel that with time an the compulsion to apply for as many opportunities as I can finally settle into it with real actual optimism! XD

  • Hey Cameron,
Thanks for sharing, this is a great read. It sounds like you had a good time making this. I especially liked reading all the technical stuff and about the physical acting challenges. I look forward to seeing the finished film. Do you know when and where it will be shown?
