Fancy making the most of your summer and seeing the world? Working or volunteering abroad can have many benefits, such as:
- deepening your awareness of cultural and social diversity
- contribute to communities and lives in other countries
- develop existing and new skills, learn a language, and gain independence and confidence
- meet like-minded people and make lifelong friends from across the globe!
Interested? Don't miss the GoGlobal Fair, which takes off on Owen Level 6 on Wednesday the 6th of February, 11am until 2pm.
There will be a range of employers to speak to offering both paid and volunteering opportunities. Whether interested in camp work in the USA, teaching in the Far East, sports coaching in Indonesia or volunteering on rewarding global projects, there are many opportunities available for all students and all disciplines. Full details and line-up is here and presentations from organizations are here.
What about costs?
This is an important question to consider carefully and below are some pointers and lower or no cost attending organisations, but do check the detail of each opportunity.
- British Council Generation UK FUNDED internships are offered by both Pagoda Projects and CRCC Asia (Deadline 10th Feb)
- European Solidarity Corps (part of Erasmus) offers paid work experience and volunteering across Europe with expenses!
- Camp Counselor work, typically in the USA and Canada. Although there are some fees involved for the job matching and support provided, these are comparatively low and you also get a basic wage/spending money. Work can be with young people or camp support staff. Specialist skills such as sports and Performing Arts are valued but not essential. Many of these organizations also offer similar support packages for other types of paid work experience. Seven such organizations are attending, for example CCUSA, who also offer opportunities in Russia!
- AIESEC is a youth driven network that offers a range of paid and volunteering opportunities with a relatively low fee and often expenses are covered.
- Opportunity China - paid graduate teaching roles (final year students only)
There are other exciting volunteering opportunities that may have higher costs, but the university only invites organizations who have an ethical and sustainable approach. One example is Working Projects abroad, who explain their ethos here.
Help with costs
Don't forget the Hallam Go Global fund that offers up to £500 bursaries to help with costs. Next deadline is 25th Feb.
