More than a Typical Play

More than a Typical Play

Typical Girls cast. Image by Helen Murray

Typical Girls a thrilling experience performed by a great ensemble. They continued to bounce off each other after a strong start. The use of breaking the fourth wall was well executed and showed the use of Brechtian techniques. They also used placards using a projection on a screen when the character would break the fourth wall and talk about their story. While the characters broke the fourth wall the rest of the characters would have a freeze frame, I enjoyed the freeze frame as it created a focus point on the character talking to us.

This was the first play I have seen since covid-19 hit. The play showed great character traits for why they were in prison and their connection with their families outside of the security. The use of live music helped to change the atmosphere and how the shop progresses as the characters learn their instruments. The use of instruments on stage playing live music shows how well the actors multitask while playing some hard instruments.

The use of telling the characters' story allowed us to understand where the characters came from and what they have dealt with in prison.

  • Nice title, Nathan! I enjoyed this, and think you've done a good job of beginning to contextualise the performance style. Did you have a favourite part of the show?

  • Really good piece of work, enjoyed reading it, could do with some more pictures, well done.
