An unlikely pursuit

An unlikely pursuit

Hi, my name is Rebecca Goddard and I am 19 years old.

I can’t really talk about how long I have been acting for, or all the performances I’ve been in or all the experience I have.  My background is in science and maths, I did these subjects at A-Level and last year I started a degree in biochemistry.  I had chosen this career because I was good at science and it felt like a good, sensible decision at the time that would make me happy.  I was wrong.  I was unhappy and felt very lost.  I could not see a future in this sector that excited me or that I thought I would enjoy doing for the rest of my life.  I also realised that this was not my passion.  My passion was for acting and I had always known this but I had suppressed it, thinking that it was stupid and overly ambitious.  I finally realised that I would regret it if I didn’t at least try and I don’t want to live my life wondering what might have come of it.

What drew me to this course was the way it seems to encompass all aspects of performing arts, whether that be on screen in TV/film/audio, on stage in plays/musicals or even the more behind-the-scenes aspects like writing and directing our own pieces.  I believe, to be a successful actor in any field, it is important to have knowledge and experience in all of these areas, and I knew that this course would prepare me in this way.  I am also hoping that over the 3 years I will become more confident as I think confidence can be a very powerful attribute to have in life.

My favourite play I have seen in theatre is Standing At The Sky’s Edge.  I found it very moving and I think it beautifully told the story of Park Hill and what an impactful role it plays in Sheffield’s history.  I loved how at the start, it seemed like the characters of each generation were only linked by their place of residence.  However, as the story goes on, the close connections between them are revealed, alluding to the fact that Park Hill is arguably more than just a block of flats because of the way it shaped so many different lives, not only in the play but in real life too.  I also loved the nods to Sheffield culture.

I aspire to be an actor who can make others smile or brighten their day a little bit or even allow them to escape for a while, because when I go to the theatre or the cinema, that is exactly how it makes me feel and why I love it so much😊
