Two years ago, we were told by Boris Johnson that we needed to adapt our lifestyle in order to save ourselves and the NHS due to covid. While we were stuck inside watching TV and ordering Chinese takeaway; the theatre industry was in peril. Theatre venues like the crucible were shut to help prevent the spread of covid which worked but it meant that creative artists and production teams were not earning wages like they normally would.
It is now the present day, restrictions have been lifted, shops are now open, and the Crucible is back to full capacity. On the 30th of September 2021, I was lucky enough to watch Typical Girls which featured music by the Slits. Like a lot of other people, this was the first stage performance that I had physically seen since before the pandemic, and can I just say that it did not disappoint. The acting was electric as the actors really brought flair to their roles, especially, when rocking out to a song by the Slits. The play reminded me a lot of the film and musical of School Rock (mainly in plot) but it worked as they changed the setting to a prison which felt more relevant to an audience member after being trapped inside for months on end but being able to break out and just live life.
