Typical Girls is a thrilling play about five women in a specialised prison unit who come together along with their music teacher Marie played by Lucy Ellinson to learn songs of the all-female punk band The Slits, to later perform at a concert.
After not being able to see a play in the theatre for a long time due to covid and lockdown, experiencing the wild and energetic atmosphere of Typical Girls was refreshing and exciting for me. The actor's energy was phenomenal, I was instantly immersed in the play and felt I could feel the emotions of the characters, it was very engaging.
Typical Girls also has plenty of comedy elements, especially from Alison Fitzjohn's character Mouth who made me laugh multiple times during the play. Although it also has its serious moments too with each of the girls having their own moments to express their troubles by singing.
A highlight of the play for me was definitely the gig element, whenever the characters started playing their instruments and singing their punk songs, an atmosphere was created that felt very empowering especially for me as a woman as Typical Girls is all female. I really enjoyed watching this play, I left the theatre with a newfound love for punk music, it was one of the best plays I have seen, and would recommend anyone who can, to go see it!
